Most people in one way or the other have at least experienced some form of discrimination or even to some extent injustice. Most of these amounts to Racism.
Racism or in other words antagonism is the belief that groups of humans posseses different behavioral traits corresponding to inherited attributes and can be divided based on the superiority of on group over the other. The word racism is also synonymous to prejudice. As history indicates, the popular use of the word is relatively recent. It gained a lot of grounds at the beginning of the 20th century when groups have began preaching and lecturing on the abolishing of the slave trade.
In most western countries racism is the order of the day even though they always claim to stand against it. People of colour mostly from Africa, Asia and South America are the main victims of racism. Most countries in the west have laws in place against racism but majority of their people don't really care. Some even go to the extent of calling colleague humans with names of animals simply because they feel they're superior. Most European countries does not have clear cut laws on racism to the extend that it even translate into their football. Many footballers with African, Chinese, Korean and Brasilian backgrounds have been victims of racism. Most social activists campaign against this barbaric acts yet very little have been done to curb it. History has it that France once had a zoo with a young black African who was regarded as a chimpanzee. United States' on the other hand is doing great since most of these marginalized groups lives there yet there are few reports of racism compared to European countries. Colonialism and imperialism by Europeans on Pan African states are the main root causes of the modern day marginalization of some groups which makes them the main subjects of racism .
Who ever thought that even in times of war there could be room for racism. It was very pathetic when news came out of Ukraine when Russia had invaded that some African and Indian students were not allowed to board busses that was meant to evacuate refugees to neighbouring countries. This is very awkward.
The topic in discussion has gotten a lot of negative effects on the socio- economic lives of people who have to go through it.
According to the US Government Accountability Office report on discipline disparities, black students are disproportionately suspended in schools across the country. Now guess what, this same people may end up dropping out of school and become deviants in society. They may engage in drug trafficking and other activities which may in the end settle them in jail.
Also in sports, according to VOX EU, which used the Covid 19 lockdown as a natural experiment by comparing the performance of individual footballers in the Italian Serie A with and without fans in the stadium. It proved that players of African origin who are most frequently targeted by racism performs better in the absence of supporters.
Furthermore, according to the Irish Network Against Racism (INAR), it has been proven that people experiencing racism are more likely to experience barriers to employment, lower wages and discrimination when trying to access housing or financial support.
After all this I ask myself, what at all do one derived after looking down upon people and being racists against them. I thing they gain nothing. It is high time the world drop it's double standards and give each human the equal value and respect they deserve so as to curb the marginalisation of certain minority groups.
